Delightful Antique George lll sterling silver sugar basket with floral decorations and hinged handle.
The rim of the body and foot are ornamented with an applied thread decorated border in the same style of the handle.
The basket retains the original hallmarked thread style swing handle and has the identical incurved form of the body and paralleling foot.
Lion Passant Guardant hallmarked, a symbol that indicates the purity of sterling silver on an item. This hallmark features a lion with its head facing the viewer (guardant) in a walking stance (passant). It was a standard mark for sterling silver in England and was in use from 1544 until 1822.
This impressive basket was possibly was crafted by the well known London silversmith Henry Holland.
Rare single Lion Passant mark on apex of handle. .925. Just under 5oz. Early 1800's.
Can be used for sugar cubes, bonbons, sweets, trinkets, dried flowers or added to a collection of sterling.
