Secretary in "Billet doux" or "portfolio"
Mid-19th century
Precious wood, marquetry, and hand painted floral motif.
Resting on two legs connected by a spacer, a drop-leaf hand painted panel that opens to present a writing surface , various small compartments.
This type of furniture appeared at the beginning of the 19th century and derives from the fireplace screen to which, under Louis XVI, a writing desk was sometimes added. Here, if there is no longer any question of a fireplace, we keep the spirit of an elegant, light, space-saving piece of furniture, in which a few mail accessories can be placed, with its inkwell and sand box, quills and paper. Nothing more than to write a word, a "billet doux" at most, and not literary work, which the piece of furniture would not “gender" this piece of furniture: in the spirit of the times, it is the quintessence of refined femininity. A luxury piece of rare romantic piece of furniture. With the dual purpose of a fire screen, writing love letters and to maximize space in the mid 1800’s to mid 1900’s.
