This antique bronze sculpture, measuring approximately 14 inches in height and 15 inches across, channels the dramatic vigor of Guillaume Coustou’s Chevaux de Marly—the iconic marble pair commissioned in 1739 for Louis XV’s Château de Marly.
Cast in rich, burnished bronze, the piece captures a moment of kinetic tension: a rearing horse, nostrils flared and forelegs suspended mid-air, its rider gripping the reins with one hand while the other holds a crop.
The composition is compact yet expansive, with the horse’s arched neck and flared tail echoing the theatrical dynamism of Coustou’s originals. Beneath the hooves, the base is textured with foliage and rocky terrain, grounding the scene in a stylized naturalism that heightens its sense of urgency.
