1950s italian signed still life with flowers
a beautiful and rare painting by one of italy's most important avant-garde artists.
it depicts a stunning vase of flowers with intense, poetic brushstrokes.
the entire painting is imbued with an atmosphere of grace and peace that only island guizzo was capable of creating.
oil on canvas.
signed lower left “guizzo '65”.
this artwork, never before on the market, comes from an important european private collection
every item of our gallery, upon request, is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by sabrina egidi official expert in italian furniture for the chamber of commerce of rome and for the rome civil courts.
island guizzo (volpago del montello, 1915 – rome, 1987) was an italian painter.
giovanni comisso described him as the painter of the city of treviso for his inspiration and choral hymns.
he completed his studies in his native land and began his artistic training in the nearby capital of the marca trevigiana and venice.
meditating on the paintings of the great venetian masters of the sixteenth century and following in the footsteps of his colleague nino springolo, he sang of the gentle solitude of the montellian landscape (montello hill).
interned in a concentration camp, an experience that influenced his early work, island resumed his artistic activity after his liberation, which became his life's purpose.
in 1952, he left the small venetian province, which seemed to him to be limited by narrow horizons, for rome, the capital, which in those years was experiencing the splendour of la dolce vita, neorealist cinema and an internationalism that, after the hard years of artistic adaptation, led him to become an integral part of the cultural movements of via margutta and via del babuino.
his friend giorgio de chirico, with whom he formed a strong friendship, described him as a painter of strong temperament, one of the most effective portraitists of the time, a connoisseur of drawing and gifted with uncommon sensitivity.
he earned a place of honour in roman art criticism, a fame that led him to be the protagonist of an epoch-making period with the production of hundreds of works.
a portraitist of figures from the world of culture and entertainment, from aldo fabrizi to ornella vanoni, he was the subject of numerous exhibitions and newsreels, nominated by leading specialist magazines and crowned with prestigious awards, including the marc' aurelio, the highest honour awarded by the eternal city.
during his numerous artistic periods, however, he never forgot his homeland; sometimes torn by nostalgia, he commuted between rome, treviso and montello, where he had his first contacts with the art of the past, which enhanced the best of his painting and official criticism.
even in the capital of the marca island, he contributed to enriching the unprecedented cultural fervour between the 1950s and 1970s.
the sculptor memi gasparini was a valuable companion in his artistic battles and a colleague in numerous group exhibitions, as were many other artists and intellectuals from treviso, from giuseppe mazzotti to giovanni comisso, with whom he formed a strong friendship and an intense correspondence.
we cannot forget the artistic rivalries, some of which never subsided, such as that with his fellow countryman ottorino stefani, who described him as a complex, enthusiastic and unpredictable painter, also a singer of the montellian landscape and of whom island was also a teacher.
a global artist, he also collaborated with musicians, his works inspiring pianist aldo mantia.
today, most of guizzo's works are kept in private collections throughout italy, but also in canada and the usa, as well as in the museum of rome in palazzo braschi.
he painted for public places, including the side altars of the church of the oblates in treviso, the parish church of volpago and the hamlet of belvedere.
island died in rome in 1987, but according to his wishes, he was buried in the cemetery of volpago del montello.
