This exceptional vintage Chinese screen room divider exemplifies high-end craftsmanship from the 1950s, bringing cultural elegance to any interior. Featuring brass-covered feet with a rich patina, the piece showcases a hand-painted backside with delicate artistry, while the front displays intricate 3D scenes—possibly crafted with mother-of-pearl or ivory—depicting classic motifs such as floral arrangements, pagoda landscapes, or mythological figures. Likely framed in carved hardwood, this multi-panel design serves as both a functional room divider and a collector’s treasure, perfect for a living room, study, or designer-curated space. Its timeless beauty and potential use of premium materials make it a rare find.
Chinese screens from the 1950s reflect a rich tradition of fine artistry, often produced by skilled artisans for export or elite use. Incorporating brass, mother-of-pearl, or ivory, these pieces blended traditional Chinese design with mid-century influences, featuring motifs like nature-inspired florals, architectural pagodas, or cultural mythology to appeal to global tastes. Highly prized by collectors and interior designers, they embody a fusion of heritage and sophistication, though materials like ivory may be subject to modern trade regulations.

The black lacquer paint that coats the surface of both sides shows some patina (color fading, minor chipping and scratches - the worst of which can be seen in the detail photos and natural light video provided). The gold-leaf painted symbols and scenery also shows minor patina and fading. The brass feet and hinges too show tarnishing and patina but the screen easily extends and contracts and remains perfectly balanced and free standing either when folded or fully extended. All figurines, hardstone accents and raised pieces are present with none missing or damaged in any significant way. When fully extended the room divider measures 64.5" in length. When fully folded the screen shrinks down to a depth of 5" x a width of 16" making storage easy and convenient. Each of the four panels measures 16" in width. This character and culturally-rich room divider is functional, structurally sound and ready for a lifetime more of use. Please view all photos and natural light video provided for details on this piece's current condition.
