Jack Winthrop "Eye See" Neo-Expressionist Style Mixed Media Painting :
This striking mixed-media work by Jack Winthrop (American b.1989) merges painting and sculpture into a powerful commentary on vision, identity, and violence. Executed in acrylic on canvas with layered graffiti-inspired linework, the central composition features a haunting male portrait in deep shades of blue, inscribed with the words “EYE SEE.” A Basquiat-like crown floats above the figure, symbolizing inner sovereignty and resilience amid turmoil.
What sets the piece apart is the addition of a bold three-dimensional sculptural element: a vivid yellow-painted machine gun affixed directly onto the canvas. This sculptural intervention, created in collaboration with contemporary artist Charles Gitnick (American, b. 2002)—known for his work interrogating themes of gun culture and youth—transforms the weapon from an object of menace into one of irony, critique, and cultural symbolism. The word “Empty” inscribed on the gun, alongside a heart motif, further underscores the tension between destruction and humanity.
With its energetic layering of acrylic, spray strokes, and urban iconography, the artwork resonates within the traditions of Neo-Expressionism, Street Art, and Urban Contemporary assemblage, while its collaborative sculptural gesture amplifies its relevance to today’s cultural discourse.

About the artist :
About the artist : (Source - Official site of Jack Winthrop )
Jack is an accomplished artist from Minneapolis, Minnesota (Born July 26th, 1989) who moved to Los Angeles after living and working in New York City for a decade. Jack graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City with a BFA majoring in graphic design, brand identity, and advertising. When Jack was developing his style as a child drawing and creating was like breathing. Almost involuntary. Innately Jacks curiosity drove him and his diligence to make new things daily.
Currently Jack delves into defining spontaneity, his art reflects something that resides deep within. A flow state that emerges from the process of production and generation. Art as spirituality or meaningful introspection. Searching for meaning in the conceptual speculation of what it means to leave your mark. He explores the tools and materials in which compose his voice. He deploys refined and sophisticated judgements through form, color, and composition which he attributes to his education in design while living in new York city. Jack primarily works with large-scale paintings on canvas, focusing on abstracting the human form to develop a unique visual language. His current work explores themes of the subconscious, dream states, loss of innocence, life/death, and our perception of time's fluidity. He seeks to capture these concepts by navigating an eclectic range of styles and subjects. Captivated by the human condition, Winthrop translates and transforms it through his expressive brush strokes.
