Antique Persian Tribal Kurdish rug, size: 4'6" x 8'4".
Five amusing human figures are scattered within the rosettes and lancet leavers of the informally rendered herati design on the brown-black ground, A red bracketed rosette main border frames the whole. Human figures, often the weavers and their families, are a charming feature of such Kurdish village carpets as this c. 1880 example.
Antique Persian Allover Geometric Wool Hand Knotted Pile Brown Earth Tone 1880s Rug, Country of Origin: Iran / Persia, Circa Date: 1880s. This exquisite piece represents the finest tradition of Iranian Persian rugs from the late Qajar era. Its dense, hand-knotted wool pile and highly saturated dyes speak to its village provenance, featuring a captivating, dense allover design populated by stylized human figures, animals, and tribal motifs, characteristic of nomadic weaving.
The foundation of this textile is a rich, deep brown earth tone, providing a dramatic contrast for the vibrant secondary colors. Accents of madder red, indigo blue, and soft saffron yellow are strategically deployed, creating visual depth without sacrificing the rug’s overall sophisticated patina. The natural wool fibers have mellowed beautifully over more than 140 years.
While many antique textiles of this age are broad area pieces, this particular example is rendered in a narrow, elongated format, making it an exceptional Hallway Runner Rugs (4.06ft x 8.04ft). The preservation of the borders, which feature repeating stylized floral and geometric elements, is remarkable given the rug’s age and typical use in high-traffic areas.
As a highly collectible example of 19th-century tribal weaving, this runner offers both historical significance and unparalleled decorative impact. It is a superb addition to any collection of fine antique rugs, embodying the enduring artistry and cultural narrative woven into the fibers of the Persian tradition.
