Jack Winthrop (American, b. 1989)
Untitled (Mixed-Media Painting)
This striking large-scale work by Jack Winthrop exemplifies his bold fusion of Neo-Expressionist figuration and urban street art aesthetics. Part of his Wounded Healer series and executed in acrylic, spray paint, and mixed media on canvas, the painting vibrates with graphic energy, fragmented imagery, and symbolic text.
At the center, a stylized figure rendered in sharp black and white lines confronts the viewer, its features fractured into cubist planes and layered with surreal iconography.
Words and phrases—“FATE,” “NOT REAL ECHO,” “SINK SWIM,” “I AM YOU”—float across the surface, evoking themes of identity, illusion, and existential choice. A three-dimensional red toy gun is affixed to the canvas, cutting across the composition with a jarring physical presence, underscoring tensions between violence, play, and fate. The red gun is an addition in collaboration with LA Based artist Charles Gitnick.
Winthrop’s palette of electric yellows, turquoise, and deep blacks amplifies the urban edge of the work, while arrows, crowns, and graffiti-style marks channel the visual language of both Jean-Michel Basquiat and contemporary mural culture. The layering of text, symbols, and figuration creates a restless dialogue between chaos and order, the personal and the universal.

About the artist : (Source - Official site of Jack Winthrop )
Jack is an accomplished artist from Minneapolis, Minnesota (Born July 26th, 1989) who moved to Los Angeles after living and working in New York City for a decade. Jack graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City with a BFA majoring in graphic design, brand identity, and advertising. When Jack was developing his style as a child drawing and creating was like breathing. Almost involuntary. Innately Jacks curiosity drove him and his diligence to make new things daily.
Currently Jack delves into defining spontaneity, his art reflects something that resides deep within. A flow state that emerges from the process of production and generation. Art as spirituality or meaningful introspection. Searching for meaning in the conceptual speculation of what it means to leave your mark. He explores the tools and materials in which compose his voice. He deploys refined and sophisticated judgements through form, color, and composition which he attributes to his education in design while living in new York city. Jack primarily works with large-scale paintings on canvas, focusing on abstracting the human form to develop a unique visual language. His current work explores themes of the subconscious, dream states, loss of innocence, life/death, and our perception of time's fluidity. He seeks to capture these concepts by navigating an eclectic range of styles and subjects. Captivated by the human condition, Winthrop translates and transforms it through his expressive brush strokes.
