A vibrant and intense modern abstract painting on stretched canvas by Virginia artist Roderick Coles. A dense, complex color field of greens support the works' narrative of one of ancient Rome's most prolific and wealthy chariot drivers ; Gaius Appuleius Diocles . Born in Lusitania province around 104 AD, Diocles began chariot racing at age 18 in and around Rome, most notably he performed often at the Circus Maximus, racing a 4 horse chariot. The structure is scrawled loosely on the left side of the painting. He was by many historical accounts, very ambitious and became Rome's richest athlete. Ever.
The painting brings the story to the 21st Century and will add drama to any space in which it is employed.
