Description: Antique 19th Century (Meiji Period 1868-1923) Japanese Ginger Jar Satsuma Mille Fleur.
Pattern: “A thousand flowers” (Mille Fleur). Chrysanthemums, peonies and various flowers colors red, blues, yellows and white on a background of gilt. Patterned band around base and lid. Hand painted

History of Satsuma: Name of fine quality porcelain made in Japan. Original ware is characterized by fine network of crackles in the glaze and extensive use of gold trim. Majority of pieces date around middle of 19th Century.

Mark: Shimazu family crest
The Shimazu Family Crest (cross within a red circle) indicates that the piece was made under the rule of Shimazu clan. The crest is always found at the top of the cartouche.
