A remarkable Japanese plaster figure, entirely hand-painted and finished with a glossy lacquer coating. It represents Tenjin, the deified form of Sugawara no Michizane (845–903), revered in Japan as the kami of learning, poetry, and calligraphy.
Dimensions: height 32 cm, width 33 cm, depth 14 cm.
The seated figure wears formal court robes in black and red adorned with floral motifs, and holds a shaku (ritual baton) – a symbol of dignity and wisdom. Its expressive face is lively and characterful, a hallmark of the folk art traditions of this period.
This type of Tenjin figure was produced in mid-20th century Japan, often in regions such as Ōmi (Shiga), where clay and plaster figures were especially popular. They were used both in festivals and in domestic settings as protective icons, particularly associated with success in studies and examinations.
In very good condition, with original polychrome painting and varnish that have developed a rich patina over time.
An authentic and atmospheric piece that is not only culturally significant but also serves as a unique interior accent, equally striking in a modern or eclectic setting.
