Émile Gallé (Nancy, May 4, 1846 - Nancy, September 23, 1904) was a French glassmaker and decorator, born into a family of crystal merchants.
His artistic training began with his father, a glassmaker and ceramist, in the Saint-Clément factory.
Around the age of eighteen he went to Germany to study mineralogy and botany.
At the end of the Franco-Prussian War, he decided to go to London for a time. He then travels to Switzerland and Italy visiting museums and is admired by medieval glassworks.
In 1873 he returned to Nancy and began making artistic works in glass representing forms of nature, both floral and animal. During this period he became the most important representative of the Nancy school and the forerunner of the new art of glassmaking, included in the modern style current.
From 1874 to 1884 he produced transparent glass, also inspired by Arab and Persian enamels. He presented his new working and production techniques during the 1878 Paris Universal Exhibition, where he won four gold medals.
In 1878 he took over the management of the family business, which he transformed into an artistic glassworks, and between 1880 and 1889, he made numerous glass and ceramic objects, also marked by a certain Oriental influence.
His works were characterized by glass pastes that were delicate in color and shade. He also made cabinet work.
