This desk was designed by swiss designer willy guhl (1915–2004) for the office for industrial architecture (bia), zurich, and was created between 1945 and 1955. Typical of guhl's work during this period, it combines a clear, functional design with a robust choice of materials, designed for intensive use in schools, universities, and public offices.
the frame is made of powder-coated tubular steel in dark red-brown, curved in stable yet light lines. The warm grain of the veneered wood tabletop provides a homely contrast to the industrial frame. Attached to the side is a green drawer unit with two drawers and round wooden handles, which adds colorful accents and underscores the practical nature of the piece. The "bia" stamp on the underside of the tabletop confirms its production by bia zurich.
condition:
the desk is in good vintage condition with an authentic patina. The metal frame shows minor paint chips and age-related marks, but remains stable. The wooden tabletop shows light scratches and wear, reflecting decades of use. The green lacquered drawer unit is functional, with minor abrasions on the edges. Overall, a well-preserved, immediately usable witness to swiss design history.
