After attending SFSU, where he earned a BA in economics, he pursued another interest- woodworking. In 1971 he became interested in a simple bandsawn box form. He has developed the concept into a fanciful organic style of box, and he has become known for his fine selection of woods and his beautifully finished pieces.

These sculptural boxes begin with the selection of fine hardwoods. Some were imported from around the world, some were natives of Northern California, which Fred gathered and milled. Fred Buss woodworks studio was located in Cazadero, California. After the wood was properly seasoned, he would use a bandsaw to form the pieces into rounded, flowing box forms. After sanding, they were finished with a Danish oil and wax treatment and buffed to a lustrous shine. This small lidded box is made of Koa and Walnut, stamped by Fred Buss. See less
