British Sailor's Woolwork of Royal Navy Ship off Land,
Signed & Dated WR 1865.
Crafted with meticulous detail, this charming miniature woolwork depicts a Royal Navy ship sailing near the coast in 1865. Known as a "woolie," this type of folk art was a popular pastime for sailors at sea. The three-masted ship, flying the White Ensign, is a prominent feature, with a distinctive funnel visible on deck with furled sails above.
The coastal landscape provides a serene backdrop, with a sandy beach stretching across the foreground, lined by a black balustrade fence. On the left, a quaint church stands with two paths leading away—one to a small house and the other to the shore. To the right, a fort flies the Union Jack, with a pathway leading to a large house by the sea. Two additional red-roofed houses are visible behind the ship.
The woolie is signed with the maker's initials, "WR," and the year "1865" in red wool at the bottom right. The piece is housed in a handsome hand-painted frame designed to mimic tortoiseshell, adding to its unique appeal. This historical artwork offers a captivating glimpse into the life and artistry of a British sailor.
