Monet’s idea had been to create a garden like no other in its arrangement and extent. For example, he had a profusion of plants tossed into vast squares like patches of cabbages, beans or carrots. The result achieves an unbelievable intensity. Nothing is left to chance: as in his paintings, where everything appears to be spontaneous and haphazard but is not, the garden is planned with a great deal of calculation, experience, and knowledge of the laws of harmony. Few people could use the space so wisely. However, even though the method has been revealed, I would not advise anyone to try to cultivate a garden like Monet's, even if they are skilled gardeners. To begin with, the cost of such an enterprise is staggeringly expensive. For Monet, though, it was a necessary expense. First, because he is a man who appreciates splendid things - a fact clearly demonstrated by his passion for the most ostentatious of flowers. Furthermore, the garden is of admirable assistance to him in his work. It is a priceless collection of the most intense and rare harmonies: an unequalled palette.
