A very fine pair of antique French Semainier chests of drawers, inlaid kingwood with veined golden ochre colored marble tops & gilt bronze mounts, by E. Kahn & Cie, Paris, circa 1895.
This fine & rare pair of seven drawer chests are surmounted with the original marble tops, the chests below are made of kingwood that is laid down in a chevroned pattern. The chests have ormolu bracket mounts to the top, each drawer has a gilt bronze lockplate and twin gilt bronze handles. Each chest having inlaid panels to the sides and both chests have a shaped skirt mounted with a gilt bronze panel, they are raised on cabriole legs with ormolu sabots.
Both chests have the cabinetmaker's label " Envoi de E. Kahn & Cie Paris ", both chests are in very good indeed and are ready to grace your home.
E. Kahn & Cie. were highly skilled & respected cabinetmakers that produced & sold the most celebrated French eighteenth-century models after models by Weisweiler, Stockel, Benneman, Cressent, Gaudreaux and Riesener. Kahn was also known to have produced and sold the Edwardian furniture fashionable at that time in London. In England, his company was advertised as E. Kahn & Co. Ltd., "Manufacturers of Furniture and Upholstery, specialists in lacquered furniture, wholesale & export," with premises at 6-10 St. Andrew St. and 18-21 Charlotte St. and with a factory at 19-51 Gough St. In Paris, he was located at 84, avenue Ledru-Rollin in the 12th arrondissement. To Kahn's credit, François Linke allowed one of his most important creations, the grand bureau, index number 550, for which he won a gold medal at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle, to be illustrated in his London brochure.
