This plate presents portrait-style depictions of two of the four Evangelists, richly engraved in the baroque tradition. The upper scene depicts Saint Luke, seated in a study with writing tools and a large open book. At his side lies the ox, his traditional attribute, symbolizing sacrifice and service. The architectural background includes classical columns and a distant city view, reinforcing his role as both historian and theologian. Luke, often called “the beloved physician,” is shown in contemplative pose, emphasizing his Gospel’s focus on compassion and healing. The lower scene shows Saint John the Evangelist, portrayed as a visionary seated outdoors in a rocky landscape. A divine light shines upon him from above, while his traditional attribute, the eagle, is often associated with the soaring theological insight of his Gospel. John holds a writing implement and scroll, symbolizing the recording of divine revelation, while his gaze is lifted heavenward in inspiration. This engraving forms part of Mortier’s monumental illustrated Bible, which paired narrative biblical scenes with devotional portraits of prophets, apostles, and evangelists. The figures are shown with dignity and symbolic clarity, intended to provide both instruction and inspiration to readers. Condition report: Good condition. Strong impression with wide margins. Minor toning and faint foxing at edges, small handling marks consistent with age. Images remain sharp and finely detailed. Framing tips: A cream or ivory double-aperture mat will separate the portraits while keeping them together as a unified plate. A walnut or ebonized frame provides sober dignity, while a gilt frame enhances the sacred and monumental qualities of the evangelists. Technique: Copperplate engraving Maker: Pieter Mortier, Amsterdam, ca. 1700 See less
