The story of the Winged Victory of Samothrace is that of a monument from a lost era: it is one of the major works of Hellenistic sculpture in Ancient Greece from the 2nd century BC. It was located on the island of Samothrace, in what was the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, a temple dedicated to the pantheon of Greek mythology, Nike, the Goddess of Victory.

Winged, the Goddess experienced a long period of limblessness, and for good reason: when she was discovered in 1863 by the French archaeologist Charles Champoiseau (1830-1909), she was nothing but fragments of her former glory. Over years of research and collaboration, Austrian and French archaeologists succeeded in piecing together this marble puzzle and restoring Nike's former glory by restoring her wing, reproducing her bust, and the missing wing. However, the feet, head, and arms were never rebuilt, in the hope that one day they would be found.
