She is shown in a deep blue velvet gown trimmed with fur, with a long pearl belt draped elegantly across the dress and down to the hem. Her attire is completed with a jewelled french hood and veil, richly decorated bodice, and delicate pearl jewellery. The caption identifies her as marie d’angleterre, 3e femme de louis xii, morte en 1534. Mary tudor was the daughter of king henry vii of england and sister to henry viii. In 1514 she became the third wife of the elderly king louis xii of france, though he died only a few months later. She later secretly married charles brandon, duke of suffolk, causing considerable scandal at the english court. This engraving is a ca. 1900 reprint after the *galerie française de femmes célèbres*, first published in paris in 1827. Designed by louis marie lanté and engraved by georges jacques gatine, the series was based on sources preserved by roger de gaignières, who documented portraits and costumes of european nobility. The print combines historical interest with decorative appeal, offering both a representation of tudor–french relations and a striking image of royal renaissance fashion. Condition: very good. General light toning and minor edge wear, not affecting the image. Strong impression with well-preserved hand colouring. Blank verso. Framing tips: a wide ivory mount and a gilt frame would highlight the richness of the blue gown and pearl belt. Alternatively, a dark wood frame would create contrast and emphasize the fur trim and veil. Technique: handcoloured engraving maker: georges jacques gatine after louis marie lanté, reprint paris, ca. 1900 See less
