Bronze medallion designed by artist Gino Marotta depicting a stylized rose. Gino Marotta (Campobasso, 1935 - Rome, 2012) was an Italian painter and sculptor. After an initial period of original experimentation with informal art, in the early 1960s he began researching the dynamic synthesis between figuration, language, and codes. He subsequently showed an increasingly marked interest in new chemical/industrial materials, specifically methacrylate. The artist used this hyper-technological material poetically, creating lyrical universes populated by trees and animals, lightning bolts and starry skies, as in the famous installation Bosco naturale-artificiale (Natural-Artificial Forest) presented in Foligno in 1967. In the 1980s, Gino Marotta returned to more “traditional” materials and techniques, including painting. The artist actively participated in and designed some of the most famous exhibitions in the Italian neo-avant-garde scene, including “Lo Spazio dell'Immagine” (1967), “Amore Mio” (1970), and “Vitalità del Negativo” (1970). In addition, in 1968 he was featured in exhibitions such as “Teatro delle Mostre” at the Galleria La Tartaruga, “Arte Povera+Azioni povere,” curated by Germano Celant, and in other important venues such as the Venice Biennale, MoMA, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, and finally, a solo exhibition at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome (2012).
