A pair of elephant antique bookends made by Ronson of Newark, NJ in 1923. They are artistic, decorative and highly collectible.
The molded pair of metal bookends are in the shape of elephants with howdah trappings and a dark - nearly black - finish. They have ivory-colored enameled tusks. The bases have decorated edges.
One bookend has a felt on the base, while the other does not. The front of each bookend is molded with the words “LV Aronson 19 C 23”.
Ronson bookends were produced by The Art Metal Works, founded by Louis V. Aronson in 1897 in Newark, NJ, which later became known as Ronson. These decorative, collectible metal wares, including bookends, were popular from the early 1900s through the 1930s, often reflecting Art Deco styles and themes. Known for their weight and detailed finishes, which could include bronzed, gold-plated, or polychrome effects, Ronson bookends showcased diverse subjects from figures to animals and historical scenes.
