Mirror is carved in giltwood and crowned … Read more 19th Century Regency or Federal Carved Giltwood Convex Bullseye Mirror with Eagle Pediment. Mirror is carved in giltwood and crowned with a boldly rendered eagle pediment. The circular frame is detailed with a series of raised gilt spheres, a signature feature of Federal mirrors, adding visual rhythm and depth. The eagle, wings outstretched, rests upon a cluster of carved rock work, symbolizing strength, liberty, and vigilance (patriotic emblems in early America). Convex mirrors became a hallmark of refinement in Federal interiors, not only for their ability to reflect and amplify light, but also for their symbolic and architectural presence.
