Giovan Battista Salvi, known as "il Sassoferrato" (1609 - 1685), circle/follower
Antique painting 'Jesus with the Patron's Son' (or Saint Joseph with the Child, or 'Paternity')
Oil on canvas (76 x 59 cm, with a non-contemporary temple-shaped frame, 99 x 84 cm)
The interesting canvas we are pleased to offer recalls the iconographic model of the classic paternity, which traditionally depicts Saint Joseph tenderly holding the sleeping baby Jesus in his arms.
Although popular tradition would have him as a mature man, the Bible does not actually mention Joseph's age when Jesus was born, and therefore, painters of every era have portrayed him at a young age, as our painting might suggest.
One aspect that makes our work extremely intriguing, and deserves a deeper interpretation, is Joseph's face, whose features unmistakably recall those we usually identify with Christ.
An alternative and certainly original interpretation, our favorite, could be that of Christ holding a child in his arms, joined to the figure of the patron of the artwork. This painting was commissioned for a birth or as a gift of good luck, and the emotional interaction between father and son exudes a strong sense of tenderness and protection.
Turning now to the stylistic aspects, we are faced with a painting that exhibits the unmistakable characteristics of devotional depictions that made the workshop of Giovan Battista Salvi, known as Sassoferrato, famous, although it depicts a rather unusual subject compared to his canonical iconography, which is more tied to single Marian depictions or those with the Child.
Sassoferrato, named after his hometown in the Marche region, trained in Rome with Domenichino, coming into contact with the classicism of the great masters of the past, particularly Raphael, his constant source of inspiration.
Our artist, active between the 17th and 18th centuries, must have studied the works of Sassoferrato, celebrated for his easel paintings of devotional subjects characterized by a refined intimacy, a trait evident in the present painting. The remarkable elegance of the depiction of the figure of Joseph (or Christ) and the serene composure of his expression convey a sense of solemn sacredness, in a composition far removed from any reference to the Passion.
We consider this painting to be extremely evocative and exquisitely crafted, characterized by a vibrant application of color, irradiated by a clear light, typical of Salvi's palette, which beautifully highlights the smooth surface of the composition. Finally, it's worth mentioning the artist's incredible ability to capture the beautiful interplay of light and shadow from his own style, emphasized by the perfection of the sfumato that defines the harmonious forms, resulting in the two protagonists appearing to be bathed in a halo of supernatural light.
The work is in good condition, with some older restorations. The painting is completed by a pleasant temple-shaped frame.
