Historic Antique British C1919 Hand-Carved Heraldic School Crest Plaque Sculpture — Rivington & Blackrod Grammar School, Lancashire
Unique Arts & Crafts Revival Artifact of British Scholarly Heritage
A Singular Piece of English History
This finely hand-carved wooden wall plaque bears the crest of Rivington & Blackrod Grammar School, Lancashire. Created in 1919–1920, it stands as both a decorative object and a tangible relic of English educational heritage. Unlike later reproductions, this is an original one-of-a-kind work, executed by a young scholar at the school over a century ago.
A School with Royal and Ecclesiastical Roots
Founded in 1566 under the charter of Queen Elizabeth I, Rivington Grammar School was established by Bishop James Pilkington, a key figure of the English Reformation. Its heraldic imagery draws on both the Pilkington family arms and the See of Durham, symbolizing its deep ties to the Church of England.
Bishop’s Mitre – authority and Christian foundation
Star ⭐ – enlightenment through faith and learning
RBGS Initials – identity and tradition united in heraldry
Carved by a Student Artisan ✍️
The plaque was carved by Herbert Robert Southworth, then only 14 years old and a student at RBGS. His inscription on the reverse records his name, age, and the date. A provenance label further confirms its authenticity and connection to the school. This youthful yet skilled carving preserves the artistry, individuality, and spirit of the Arts & Crafts Revival era.
Craftsmanship & Style
The rectangular plaque, softened by rounded corners, features the crest in low relief (bas-relief). This restrained sculptural technique gives subtle depth, catching light and shadow with elegance. The result is a work that balances heraldic solemnity with handcrafted character — qualities prized in early 20th-century British decorative arts.
