This imposing Japanese tsubo jar from the 1940s is crafted from terracotta and stands as an impressive and rare decorative piece.
Dimensions: height 53 cm, diameter 42 cm.
The jar features a powerful, rounded body that tapers gracefully upward into a narrow, slightly raised neck. Its surface is adorned with a refined diamond-shaped pattern. Over this, a thin white engobe (slip layer) has been applied and partially removed, revealing the warm reddish-brown terracotta beneath. This creates a lively relief and a distinctive character, perfectly reflecting the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic.
Traditionally, tsubo jars were used for storing water or dried tea leaves. Today, this unique piece is ideally suited as a large decorative object or as a floor vase for branches and floral arrangements.
A remarkable and authentic object from the Japanese ceramic tradition – timeless, powerful, and full of character.
