The depth of the motifs of this hand-carved gilded mirror is quite impressive, making it an exquisite example of a … Read more The depth of the motifs of this hand-carved gilded mirror is quite impressive, making it an exquisite example of a Florentine mirror from the late 1700s. Immediately surrounding the beveled glass is a shapely, fluted border with an angular edge. Repeating leafy C-scrolls surmount the fluting, echoing the massive foliate carvings that comprise the rest of the frame. The ornate outer edge of the frame is a series of pierced acanthus margents with great movement. However, the most impressive motif might be the expansive crest centered around a scrolled console with lozenge ground. On either side is a large foliate rinceau that is once again full of life. At the apex is a highly curled leaf that extends beyond the rest of the frame, designed to be the focal point in whichever room it is placed. See less
