These candelabras are characteristic of the French Empire period (early 19th century), known for its neoclassical revival influenced by ancient Greek and Roman art. They are crafted from gilt (gilded) bronze and patinated bronze, showcasing a rich contrast between the gleaming gold finish and the darker, aged bronze surfaces. Each candelabrum features a standing classical figure – one depicting a male warrior (possibly Mars), the other a female warrior (likely Minerva) – often shown in armor and holding iconic attributes like a sword, spear, or shield.
The candelabras are stamped Thomire A Paris.
Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751–1843) was known for his masterful work in gilt-bronze and patinated objects, including candelabras, often featuring classical figures like Victories. His large workshop produced numerous pieces for the Imperial court and foreign aristocracy.
