Wilbert Verhelst (American, 1923 - 2012) "The Hunter", cast bronze Brutalist sculpture, signed in ink on base "Verhelst, 78". Raised on a small black wood base.
This piece depicts an abstract, Brutalist style bird, whether predator hawk or prehistoric in nature, frozen in stature, waiting for its catch. Perfect for an office bookshelf display, or a modernist living room console feature.
Artist:
Wilbert Verhelst was born in 1923 in Wisconsin and received his B.F.A. and M.A. from the University of Denver. His sculpture has been the subject of major exhibitions at institutions such as the San Francisco Museum of Art, the Denver Art Museum, the Museum of New Mexico, and Southern Methodist University's Pollock Gallery. Verhelst established the sculpture program for the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas in 1964, was made Professor Emeritus in 1986.
