The Breton bull stands in profile against a coastal landscape, its sturdy frame and distinctive black-and-white markings captured with precision. The animal’s strong build reflects its historical role as both a draught animal and a valued source of meat and milk in the rural economy of Brittany. The print was produced in 1862 as part of a series of agricultural illustrations commissioned in France to document and promote regional livestock breeds. It was drawn by C. Troprès and lithographed under the direction of Riffaut, with publication by Lemercier in Paris, one of the most prominent lithographic houses of the 19th century. The series combined scientific accuracy with artistic sensibility, aiming to highlight both the utility and aesthetic appeal of domestic breeds. This work exemplifies the mid-19th century interest in animal husbandry and rural improvement, when detailed images of livestock were essential to breeding programs and agricultural exhibitions. The Breton breed, in particular, was highly regarded for its adaptability and resilience in the rugged landscapes of western France. Condition report: Very good impression with clean, strong lines. Minor foxing and age toning in the margins, typical for the period, not affecting the main image. Wide margins preserved. Framing tips: A classic choice is a dark wood or walnut frame with a cream or light grey mat to bring out the tonal contrasts of the lithograph. For a more rustic look, an oak frame with a textured mat can complement the agricultural subject matter. Technique: Lithograph Maker: Drawn by C.
