Unique German Manuscript Broadside with Printed Border – Virgin Mary, 18th c. An exceptionally rare devotional broadside from 18th-century Germany, combining a printed ornamental border with hand-written blackletter calligraphy in ink. While the floral and architectural frame was produced by a printer, the central text was carefully inscribed by a skilled scribe, making this a unique manuscript broadside rather than a purely printed sheet. Translation of the German text: "The burning thorn bush never consumed, God Himself has set as an example. Mary’s virginity it was to show, how pure nature can remain so beautifully. Just as crystal lets the sun shine through, the sun of divinity penetrated Mary’s body, yet caused her no harm. The flower of purity, the mother never lost; before, in, and after the birth she stood like a lily, pure." The devotional poem honors the Virgin Mary’s perpetual purity, drawing on biblical imagery: the burning bush that blazed but was not consumed, crystal transmitting sunlight without harm, and the lily as a symbol of incorruptible innocence. This allegorical meditation reflects the Marian devotion of the baroque era, merging poetic theology with visual artistry. Such hybrid works were intended for private devotion or display in chapels, where their beauty and uniqueness enhanced their spiritual impact. Unlike mass-printed broadsides, each surviving example differs slightly, with the individuality of the calligrapher’s hand adding to its rarity and collector appeal. This piece offers collectors an opportunity to acquire not only a fine devotional artifact but also a manuscript object enriched by the interplay of print and handwriting. Its hybrid nature makes it especially significant for those interested in early modern religious art, manuscript culture, and the history of print. Collector’s Note: This devotional broadside stands out for its hybrid nature, combining a printed ornamental border with a hand-written central text. Unlike mass-produced devotional prints of the 18th century, such manuscript broadsides were individually inscribed by scribes, meaning no two examples are exactly alike. The decorative frame provided a consistent visual framework, while the calligraphy introduced a personal, artisanal quality that elevates each sheet into a unique object. This duality reflects a transitional moment in European devotional culture, where print technology enabled wider circulation of religious imagery, yet the handwritten element preserved a sense of intimacy and individuality. For collectors, this makes such works considerably rarer and more desirable than standard printed sheets. They embody both the reproducibility of print and the uniqueness of manuscript, offering a tangible link to baroque spirituality and the lived experience of Marian devotion. Surviving examples are scarce, especially in such strong condition, and appeal not only to collectors of devotional art but also to those interested in the history of print, manuscript culture, and the intersection of the two.
Condition report: The broadside is well-preserved for its age. The printed border remains sharp and clear, with decorative details intact. The manuscript calligraphy shows strong, dark ink with only minor fading. Paper exhibits even toning consistent with the 18th century, with small edge wear, light creasing, and a few tiny tears at the margins, none affecting the text or ornament. Overall, the sheet retains excellent legibility and visual appeal, with the natural irregularities of hand calligraphy enhancing its unique character.
