Item :
fabulous, extremely rare, hand-decorated and glazed majolica ceramic sculpture depicting a maternity of deer, created by the renowned ceramist eduard klablena in the early 1900s. The klablena factory mark, an inverted "e" joined to a "k," and the words "made in austria," are featured underneath. The distinctive feature of eduard klablena's ceramics is the decoration, crafted with a special technique that renders the object marble-like and simultaneously gives the depicted animals' coats an almost lifelike, almost lifelike, appearance. Our pair of deer is one of the pieces featuring this unique marble decoration, which gives the deer's coats an absolutely lifelike effect, unseen in any other deer sculpture from the 1900s. Beautiful!
useful information for item valuation:
eduard klablena boasts numerous important auction results, and his works are certainly among the highest prices of european ceramists of the early 1900s. From our online research, we found that the four highest auction results found in the "sculptures-volumes" category range from €8,000 to €14,000, while in the "ceramics" category, the four highest results range from €6,000 to €13,500, all prices always excluding a 25-30% buyer's premium. We also found several sculptures depicting animals similar in decoration, all smaller than our mother, selling at auction for truly high prices. To name a few, we found: a monkey sold for €3,800 (including fees: €4,750) at the im kinsky kunst auktionen in vienna, at the "jugendstil" auction on 01/12/2010, lot 523 entitled "eduard klablena (1881-1933), schopfaffe (1912-1918)". A sculpture depicting a small frog measuring only 8 centimeters was sold for €4,000 at the dorotheum in vienna, austria, at the "jugendstil und angewandte kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts" auction on 01/12/2005, lot 37 entitled "eduard klablena (1881-1933), kröte (c.1915-1917)". A sculpture of a bird, again much smaller than ours, sold for €5,000 at the dorotheum in vienna, austria, at the "jugendstil" auction on 30/05/2007, lot number 1 entitled "eduard klablena (1881-1933), lüstling (1918)". A small cat, only 9.4 centimeters tall, sold for €2,000 at the quittenbaum in munich, germany, at the "jugendstil - art deco" auction on 28/04/2009, lot 420 entitled "eduard klablena (1881-1933), katze (c.1913-1914)". A bulldog dog, always very small, 10.3 centimeters tall, sold for €1,800 by the dorotheum, vienna, austria, at the "jugendstil und angewandte kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts" auction on 01/12/2005, lot 34 entitled "eduard klablena (1881-1933), auf kissen ruhende zwergbulldogge (c.1912-1914)". A 16 centimeters tall parrot sold by the wiener kunstauktionen, vienna, at the "jugendstil" auction on 16/04/1997, lot 625 entitled "eduard klablena (1881-1933), sittich (c.1911-1912)". And finally, we found another monkey sold for €3,400 at the vienna dorotheum, at the "jugendstil und angewandte kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts" auction on november 25, 2003, lot 2, titled "eduard klablena (1881-1933), sitting affe (c. 1920-1925)." please note that the baby monkey from our maternity kennel alone is larger than many of the items mentioned, and a 25-30% commission is always added to the final result of each auction.
