Each plate captures the elegance and variety of European coastal birdlife, finely drawn and richly colored through the chromolithographic process. The series includes the following species: 1. Arctic Skua (Stercorarius parasiticus), also known as the Parasitic Jaeger, shown in different plumages on a rocky coastal shore. 2. Sandwich Tern (Thalasseus sandvicensis), a group of terns rendered in delicate gray and white tones with black caps, gathered near the water’s edge. 3. Common Tern (Sterna hirundo), elegant birds with red bills and feet, depicted both flying and resting along a rugged shoreline. 4. Herring Gull (Larus argentatus), a pair of robust seabirds with gray wings and yellow bills, standing on coastal rocks at sunset. 5. Egyptian Goose (Alopochen aegyptiaca), strikingly patterned birds with chestnut patches, shown wading in shallow water. 6. Northern Gannet (Morus bassanus), represented as a trio with adult, juvenile, and immature plumage, perched dramatically on a cliff edge against a stormy sea. These prints, signed “JK” in the plate, are part of a late 19th-century ornithological series that combined scientific study with decorative artistry. The chromolithographic technique allowed for exceptional richness of color and lifelike presentation, making these images both accurate and visually appealing. This set would make a beautiful wall display, ideal for collectors of ornithological prints, natural history enthusiasts, or those seeking distinctive coastal-themed artwork. Displayed together, they highlight the diversity of seabirds found across European coasts. Condition report: Good condition with strong colors. Minor age-related toning in margins and occasional light handling marks. Plate marks visible, confirming authenticity. No tears or major damage. Does not come with frames. Framing tips: For impact, frame the six plates in matching black or walnut frames with ivory mats to unify the series. The warm tones of gilt accents also complement the golden hues in the plumage and sunset backgrounds. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: J.K. (artist/engraver), c.1890, Europe See less
