Artist Biography
Albert Pike Lucas (1862 - 1945) was active/lived in New York, New Jersey / France. He is known for Atmospheric landscape and portrait painting, portrait bust sculpture.
Albert Pike Lucas was an American landscape, nude figure, and portrait painter and also a sculptor. He was especially noted for his atmospheric expressions of light and color in his paintings, and as a sculptor only four works have been located. One of them, a roughly chiseled marble female bust, Extase, which shows influence of Auguste Rodin, is in the collection of the Metropolitan Art Museum. The other sculptures are Sambo, a bronze bust; The Laughing Faun, a bronze garden fountain; and The American Girl, a marble head. He painted by preference nocturnes and twilight scenes, such as October Breezes (National Gallery, Washington), The Little Church on the Hill, and Walking Against the Wind. He also painted portraits of many prominent persons.
Lucas was born in Jersey City, and studied as a child at the Packer Art Institute in Brooklyn. In 1884, he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He studied for a year with painter Ernest Hébert and then with Gustave Boulanger after Hebert left to become the Director of the French Academy in Rome. Lucas also studied in the ateliers of Gustave Courtois and Pascal-Adolphe-Jean Dagman-Bouveret. At the Paris Salon of 1896 he won a medal. After a sojourn in Italy and spending nearly two decades in Paris, he settled in New York City in 1907. There he was active as a creative artist and in organizations including Allied Artists of America and National Academy of Design, where in 1927, he became an Academician.
