In the 18th C pointed shoe styles included the Pompadour, a court style. with a pointed toe and a curvaceous heel. In the 1790's a slip on shoe with a pointed shoe but without a heel was very popular. Shoes were custom made to fit the buyer and forms such as the one used to make these bookends would be kept by a shoemaker so that the customer did not have to be fitted for each pair of shoes. The marks on the shoe form are "lo A" in the front and "Mitan" in the back, possibly the name of the customer. The bookends measure 15.75" Long; 5.25" Wide and 7" High. See less
