A dramatic, early twentieth century, Post-Impressionist study of a young woman with dark hair, shown facing the viewer, wearing an ivory sailor's shirt and contrasted against a rocky coastline rendered in tones of emerald, gold, and turquoise.

Born 1871 in Frankfurt am Main, Alfred Hermann Helberger first studied at the Städel and the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. He lived and exhibited in both Frankfurt and Berlin, and was active as a painter and graphic artist. Over the course of his career, Helberger's brushwork became more intuitive and his palette lightened as he was influenced by the principles of European Modernism to which he became exposed on his numerous trips to Norway and Italy. Helburger exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. We are pleased to offer this dramatic and psychologically-penetrating figural study by a notable German Post-Impressionist.
