Hand-crafted from solid French walnut … Read more 19th Century French Louis XVI Painted Wardrobe is a true marvel of the cabinetmaker's art! Hand-crafted from solid French walnut which was still in abundance during the Napoleon III period, it was designed in the neoclassical revival form with stately, tailored architecture enhanced by embellishments and corner columns reminiscent of the glory of ancient Greece and Rome. The top edge is treated to a dentil motif and follows the contours of the casework below including protruding rounded corners in front. The bonnet is fitted with raised panels flanking a beautiful relief carving of a floral spray set upon a scallop shell backdrop. Each corner transitions to intricately turned, fluted and carved columns, together flanking the upper cabinet doors as well as the three drawers below. Each cabinet door is festooned with relief carvings depicting the scepter, torchere and carquois de fleche symbolizing French royalty, framed by elegant bordering and rosettes. Complementary treatment was given to the drawers below, each with hand-carved key guards and carved wood knobs, with yet another relief carving gracing the apron below. Doors open to reveal capacious storage, augmented by the three full width drawers making this piece as functional as it is beautiful to behold!
