A magnificent, large, glazed terracotta bust depicting a peasant woman, crafted by the Austrian Goldscheider factory between the late 19th and early 20th century, in the Art Nouveau style. Signed on the back by Friedrich Goldscheider, founder of the factory and presumably also the creator of this sculpture, it is numbered "990" and engraved with the inscription "Reproducion Reservée," making it one of the factory's earliest and oldest productions. The folds of the dress and the draping of the scarf tied behind the neck are stunning. The sleeves, crafted with a burin to reproduce lace, are exquisite, as are the woman's décolleté and the embossed necklace. The antique patina that covers the entire object, especially under the base, is marvelous, perfectly consistent with our dating.
Useful information for appraising the item:
Goldscheider terracottas are by far the most important, sought-after, and highly prized of all those produced in Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Just to give you an idea of the value of the terracotta sculptures made by this manufacturer, we did a quick online search and found that the four highest prices for Goldscheider Orientalist terracottas range from €11,000 to €23,000, prices always excluding a 25-30% buyer's premium. For the largest and most important terracotta busts, the four highest prices range from €5,000 to €8,500, excluding buyer's premium, for very large busts, always depicting Orientalist subjects.
