Japan is a maritime country, consisted of an archipelago of islands, large and small. Fishing is an important trade which we know already, if we consume sashimi and sushi. It is no wonder that fish and fishnets are common art motifs. This cloisonne plate featuring sea creatures is a fine example of Japanese enamel artistry of the Meiji Period (CE 1868-1912). The art of cloisonne reached a peak of technical and artistic refinement during this period. The craftsmanship of this plate was carried out with care and precision. The method is Yusen-jippo or wired cloisonne. Very fine gilt wires were used throughout. The wires outlined the fishnet, and the sea creatures including fish, crabs, eel, octopus and seaweed. These were popular because they symbolized abundance, longevity and the mystery of nature. The background is black to suggest water, a nice contrast to the white fishnet holding the sea creatures, symbolizing a successful catch. Sprays of flowers and leaves surround the net, adding touches of beauty.
The work is excellent and even the back of the plate is decorated with circular bands of round spirals covering the entire back save the area inside the foot.
