MODERNIST EBONIZED HARDWOOD OCTAGONAL PEDESTAL
Probably French, mid-20th century
30 1/4" H x 18 5/8" W x 18 1/2" D
An octagonal pedestal in ebonized hardwood with giltwood cove molding applied under the top rim and around the base. Each alternating face is mounted with a gilt bronze chiseled ornament of Neoclassical inspiration, the design centered by a rosette flanked by scrolling foliage and stylized palmettes. The blackened surface provides a striking contrast to the bright gilding, a combination often favored in the later 19th century for its association with both Napoleonic revival taste and earlier Louis XVI precedents.
The pedestal is of a convenient height for displaying tall sculpture or decorative objects while the octagonal form lends needed visual stability and allowing for presentation in the round.
Curator’s Note:
Pedestals of this type, marrying strict geometric form with restrained classical ornament, were popular among cabinetmakers in Paris. Particularly in the third quarter of the 19th century during the Napoleon III era, their use of ebonized finishes with gilt accents echoed the refined austerity of earlier Empire and Neoclassical furniture which would make them suitable for both historic interiors and modern settings. The revival of Napoleon III styling during the middle of the 20th century, especially during the Hollywood Regency era, took this modernization of antiquity a step further. The classical and neoclassical handling of furniture design during the middle of the 20th century introduced all of the necessary design components for long-term usefulness: time-tested shapes of antiquity, stark modernist austerity, exceptional quality. The present pedestal is a good example of this ethos when executed successfully.
Condition: Numerous scattered abrasions to the ebonized finish; giltwood moldings with light wear consistent with age. The pedestal was photographed prior to having the rubbing and losses touched up and while they will still be visible, rubbing and wear is largely toned down and not very noticeable. A fine presentation. Incredibly sturdy. Ready to place.
