It is taken from the book titled "illustrations d'orchidees des indes orientales neerlandaises," which translates to "illustrations of orchids from the dutch east indies," and was published in 1854. This book showcases new and lesser-known plants from the orchid family with explanatory and scientific text. Here we offer a single print from this publication. The author, w.h. De vriese, was a prominent botanist, and the illustrations were executed at the royal lithography by c.w. Mieling. J. Van aaken is credited with the life-like drawings (ad vivum del.), from which the lithographs were made. The publication was commissioned by and under the auspices of charles ferdinand pahud, the minister of the colonies at the time. The book originally contained 17 colored plates, preceded by 12 pages of text, but this print is not accompanied by text leaves. It's a monograph, meaning it's a detailed written study of a single specialized subject or an aspect of it, in this case, orchids. The publication falls under the category of botany in general, with a focus on the biology of bacteria, fungi, and plants, specifically the order orchidales. This work is an example of the scientific and artistic collaboration of the period, combining rigorous botanical study with the artistic skill necessary to produce such detailed illustrations. It would have been used for both scientific research and to showcase the exotic appeal of orchids from the dutch east indies to a european audience. The use of chromolithography allowed these illustrations to be reproduced with the vibrant colors characteristic of the original plants. The plant itself is depicted with a cluster of large, green, plicate leaves emanating from a central point, typical of many orchid species. The inflorescences hang down in a cascade, bearing numerous yellow flowers with some red or brown markings. The flowers have the characteristic bilateral symmetry of orchids, with a prominent lip, and appear delicate and ornamental. The background of the image is a neutral, pale color, which allows the plant and its flowers to stand out. The attention to detail in the leaves and flowers suggests that the illustration is both scientifically accurate and aesthetically pleasing, likely intended for both botanical study and as a decorative piece.
