The scene features a rocky river landscape with sharp outcrops and a calm pool formed between the boulders. To the right, a group of people set up camp along the riverbank, with small shelters visible among the trees and smoke rising from their fires. Figures are depicted gathering at the water’s edge, engaged in daily tasks such as cooking, washing, or preparing for river travel. The dense tropical forest rises behind the camp, while the winding Mekong River stretches into the distance, surrounded by mountainous terrain. This print was published between 1873 and 1875 in ‘Voyage d'exploration en Indo-Chine effectué pendant les années 1866, 1867 et 1868 par une Commission Française’ by Francis Garnier. Garnier, a French naval officer and explorer, led this expedition to chart the Mekong River as a potential route into China, aiming to expand French colonial influence and open trade routes to counter British dominance in Southeast Asia. His publications remain among the most beautifully illustrated works on Indo-China, combining ethnographic scenes, landscapes, and architectural studies. The technique used is engraving, ideal for depicting detailed landscapes with precise linear shading and tonal variations. Each line was incised onto a metal plate to create prints with depth and texture, making them highly valued by collectors and historians as accurate visual records before widespread photography. Condition summary: Very good condition with clean paper and strong impressions. Some minor age-toning and light foxing in the margins but no tears or repairs observed. Paper remains firm and crisp, ready for archival framing. Framing tips: A light cream or pale tan mount will harmonise with the sepia tones of the print. Choose a dark walnut, teak, or simple black frame to enhance its antique character. UV-protective glass is recommended to maintain the engraving’s clarity and prevent fading over time. See less
