This Wedgwood tea set was produced by Wedgwood in 1871. The Elder Brewster Tea Pot is a highly collectible piece of pottery; part of a very limited special series created by Wedgwood in 1870, and particularly sought out by collectors of both Wedgwood ceramics and historical memorabilia related to the Mayflower and Pilgrims. Due to the limited production run, high quality of craftsmanship and historical significance, these pieces are quite valuable in the antiques market. The series faithfully reproduces a set once part of the famed ceramics collection of Governor Caleb Lyon. That set is now part of the collection of the Brooklyn Museum. Governor Lyon was a respected collector, and he displayed this set as having been the property of Elder William Brewster, the leader of the Plymouth Colony.
Regardless of all of that, this set retains an honored place in every serious collection of ceramics. Its collectibility stems from its artistic merit, historical relevance, and the enduring reputation of the Wedgwood brand.
The set itself is of Wedgwood's proprietary Creamware, hand decorated with delicate aubergine flowers and edging. There are some well executed 19th century staple repairs to the handles.
