The plate is part of the monumental series *Cérémonies et Coutumes Religieuses de tous les Peuples du Monde*, one of the earliest illustrated encyclopedias of global religions and customs. Numbered Plate 129 from Volume V, it offers detailed visual documentation of Ottoman devotional and martial life. At the top left is a "Prieur d’un Couvent de Dervis" – the prior of a Dervish convent – depicted in calm repose with folded hands. He is dressed in layered robes and a turban, exuding both spiritual authority and serene dignity. To the right stands a strikingly dressed figure labeled “Deli, espèce de Brave qui suit le Grand Vizir.” The word "Deli" literally means "madman" in Turkish, but here refers to the elite irregular cavalry known for their fearless and often reckless behavior in battle. This “brave” figure wears a high-plumed cap and a dramatic long cloak, suggestive of ceremonial or battlefield attire. On the lower left are two “Dervis,” or dervishes, in different traditional costumes. Both wear tall cylindrical hats and robes, indicating their association with a Sufi order. One figure holds a long walking stick, while the other cradles a large book or bundle, perhaps symbolizing mystical knowledge or religious texts. The final figure at lower right is labeled “Santon autrement Calender et Abdal,” referencing wandering mendicant dervishes known throughout the Islamic world. This nearly bare-chested ascetic carries a staff and wears a primitive fur cloak. His pose, with one arm extended behind his head and a pouch at his side, suggests both rugged independence and devotion. The term “Abdal” identifies him as a member of a spiritually elite, nomadic Sufi sect believed to possess hidden wisdom. The sheet is in good condition with only light age-related toning and some faint edge wear. The plate impression is crisp, and the engraved lines remain sharp throughout. Margins are full and clean, making this sheet excellent for framing. Framing suggestion: A light cream mat with a thin walnut or ebony frame will bring out the subtle linework while respecting the historical character of the piece.
