This attractive 19th-century colored lithograph titled *gezigt van den oosterdoksdijk* presents a serene and historically rich view of amsterdam as seen from the oosterdok waterfront. With its delicate pastel tones and lively urban composition, the scene beautifully captures daily life along the water during the dutch 1800s. The view centers on the schreierstoren (the medieval defense tower with the pointed roof), surrounded by classic amsterdam canal houses and architectural landmarks. A drawbridge stretches across a canal, while pedestrians and small rowing boats animate the foreground. The round-topped dome in the background belongs to the lutherse kerk. With elegant reflections on the water and subtle gradients in the sky, the lithograph evokes a peaceful yet bustling city atmosphere.
this print was drawn by w. L. Andriessen (signed as w. L. Andreae), lithographed by p. W. M. Trap, and published by j. C. Loman jr., all active figures in the mid-19th century amsterdam printmaking and publishing scene.
the hand-colored lithograph is part of a larger series showcasing notable views of amsterdam and reflects the period’s fascination with topographical scenes and civic pride. Such prints were often produced for middle-class collectors or visitors who sought beautiful and accurate mementos of their travels or hometowns. Today, they offer valuable insight into the evolving cityscape of amsterdam before the rise of modern urbanism. Ideal for collectors of amsterdam prints, 19th-century dutch topography, or historical urban landscapes, this piece adds charm and heritage to any classic or coastal-inspired interior.
