This pivotal battle saw the Dutch fleet, led by Admiral Jacob van Heemskerk, ambush and annihilate the Spanish fleet anchored in the Bay of Gibraltar in a decisive four-hour conflict. The engraving vividly portrays the chaotic naval action, with Dutch ships such as the AEolus, De Tijger (Tiger), De Zeehond (Seal), and De Roode Leeuw (Red Lion) engaging Spanish ships like San Augustin, Nuestra Senora de la Vega, and Madre de Dios. The Dutch fleet, consisting of 26 smaller warships and four cargo ships, was meticulously coordinated to prevent the Spanish fleet's escape. Despite losing Admiral van Heemskerk and 100 sailors, the Dutch destroyed the entire Spanish fleet of 21 ships, resulting in the loss of 4,000 Spanish men, including their commander Don Juan Alvarez de Avila. The engraving showcases incredible detail, with dramatic depictions of cannon fire, smoke, and the tumultuous waves of the bay. An inset map of the region enhances its historical and geographic context. Likely published around 1650 and possibly attributed to the celebrated engraver Merian, this print is a rare and valuable piece of maritime history. Condition: Three sheets joined professionally. Clean and well-preserved with no cracks or wormholes. Original hand-coloring enhances its visual appeal.
