A lyrical, early twentieth-century Post-Impressionist landscape, showing a view of a woman reclining on a red blanket beside a country lane winding through cultivated fields at harvest time. A fine and substantial work by this well-listed female member of the first generation of the School of Paris.
Cherie-Anne-Charles Fargue first studied with Marie Laurencin at the Ecole de la Ville and, subsequently, at the Academie Julian in Paris. Adopting the pseudonym Chériane, Fargue made her debut at the Salon des Artistes Independants in 1921 and, thereafter, exhibited regularly at the Salon d'Automne, becoming a member in 1925, and at the Salon des Tuileries from the year of its founding. She also exhibited with success internationally including in Prague, New York and Vienna. Favored subjects included female figurative works and nudes as well as landscapes of Provence, where Chériane lived for many years, and of Madagascar, which she visited frequently with her husband, the Academy painter and poet, Leon-Paul Fargue. She also undertook significant public commissions including the monumental mural, entitled 'Music', which decorated the Pavilion of the 1937 Universal Exposition in Paris.
Chériane is well-listed in all relevant reference works, including Benezit, and her work is held in the permanent collections of prominent national museums including The Museum of Modern Art (Paris), the Museum of Bordeaux, and the Danish National Museum (Copenhagen) among others. We are pleased to offer this exceptional work from the artist's early period.
