This devotional sculpture … Read more A striking 19th century hand-carved and polychrome-painted wood figure of Jesus, standing an impressive 27 inches tall. This devotional sculpture retains much of its original painted surface in rich tones of green, red, and gold, with beautiful age crackling and surface wear consistent with its history. The figure is mounted on an integral plinth base, also original.

The carving captures a serene and contemplative expression, with detailed treatment of the hair, beard, and drapery folds. Works of this size and age were typically created for chapels, private devotional spaces, or regional churches.

The piece shows expected wear for its age, including losses to the paint surface, cracks in the wood, and small losses to the edges of the robe and base (see photos). These do not compromise the structure, and they contribute to the authentic presence of the piece. This is a rare survivor of 19th century Continental religious art, and it displays wonderfully as is. See less
