Perched calmly on a mossy branch with a sprig of oak leaves, the small owl is shown in a lifelike pose, its head turned attentively forward and its bright yellow eyes alert. The engraving masterfully captures the scops owl’s characteristic features—ear tufts raised, mottled plumage in shades of warm ochre and soft grey, and a compact yet agile body. The fine stippling and subtle colour gradations illustrate the dedication of both engraver and colourist to naturalistic accuracy. This plate originates from the monumental Dutch ornithological work *Nederlandsche Vogelen*, published between 1770 and 1829 in Amsterdam. As the first systematic study of native birds in the Netherlands, this multi-volume project was conceived and written by Cornelis Nozeman and Martinus Houttuyn, with illustration, engraving, and publication handled by the Sepp family—most notably Christiaan Andreas Sepp and Jan Christiaan Sepp. Each bird was portrayed as close to life-size as possible and shown in its natural surroundings, resulting in a series both scientifically significant and artistically exceptional. The Eurasian Scops Owl, a migratory species, is one of the smallest owls in Europe. It breeds in warm lowland areas, often in open woodlands, orchards, or parklands, and is known for its soft, flute-like call heard mainly on summer nights. Though discreet and well camouflaged by day, it becomes highly active at night, feeding on insects and other small prey. This nocturnal behavior is reflected in the owl’s intense gaze and forward stance in the print, capturing a moment of quiet readiness. This plate offers a refined and rare glimpse into 18th-century scientific publishing and would make an excellent addition for collectors of natural history, Dutch decorative prints, or owl-related art. Condition report Very good condition. Crisp impression with full plate mark visible. Light age toning in the margins and a few faint handling creases that do not affect the image. Colouring remains rich and finely layered. No tears, staining, or repairs. The sheet is clean and well-preserved. Framing suggestion For display, consider a soft ivory or pale sage mount to highlight the owl’s warm brown and grey tones. A mid-tone wood frame such as walnut or light oak would complement the naturalistic palette while keeping the overall appearance elegant.
