Compiled by H. Dolmetsch and printed by Julius Hoffmann in Stuttgart, this landmark design reference celebrated ornamental traditions from around the world, presenting them in precise and beautifully colored lithographic plates for designers, architects, and collectors. The first plate, titled *Lackmalerei* (Lacquer Painting), focuses on traditional Japanese patterns commonly used in lacquerware, woodwork, and textiles. Set against a deep black background, the golden motifs exhibit a range of designs from family crests and stylized florals to interlocking geometric forms and maze-like patterns. Central to the composition is a detailed medallion with a chrysanthemum—a symbol of longevity and the Imperial family—surrounded by intricate Greek key borders, stylized vines, and interlaced waves. The refined contrast of gold on black creates a visual rhythm that is both sophisticated and timeless. The second plate broadens the perspective, presenting colorful examples of Japanese *Weberei, Malerei und Zellenschmelz* (Weaving, Painting, and Cloisonné Enamel). Dominated by a serene central figure in a traditional robe, surrounded by blooming plum blossoms and cranes, this plate reflects the delicate harmony of Japanese aesthetics. Flanking the main panel are intricate embroidered textile bands, floral compositions in vases, geometric kimono patterns, and decorative enamel motifs in soft yet vibrant hues of turquoise, coral, gold, and jade green. These designs draw on traditional symbolism, craftsmanship, and the celebration of nature in Japanese visual culture. Together, the two prints illustrate the range and refinement of Japanese ornamental language—blending minimalism with complexity, symbolism with abstraction. They serve not only as historical references but as decorative art pieces in their own right. Condition: Both prints are in good antique condition. The colors are vivid and well preserved, with clean margins and no tears. Minor age toning and a few light specks of foxing may be present but do not detract from the visual appeal. The backs are blank. Framing Tips: These prints frame beautifully as a pair. Use a wide ivory or soft cream mat to highlight the artwork, and choose either simple black frames for a modern presentation or natural wood with gold accents for a more traditional look. Museum glass is recommended to protect the delicate paper and pigments. This set makes a refined and culturally rich addition to any interior with an interest in Japanese art, pattern design, or global decorative history. See less
